SPIDER-MAN (2002) REVIEW
Spider-Man: Responsibility or Desire?
The following is a review of Sam Rami’s Spider-Man 2002. This Spider-Man 2002 review will explore what a first time viewer like myself thought of the movie. I hope you enjoy!
The shot where Spider-Man see MJ in one lens and the innocent kids in the other encapsulates the message of this movie in one shot. Should Peter prioritize his desires, or his responsibility? The Goblin tells us that choices make us who we are, so who is Spider-Man? The Goblin goes through the same questions. Does Norman Osborn accept the responsibility of failure and what it brings? Or is his selfish desire to achieve success no matter what who he is?
Even though peter saved both MJ and the innocent kids (with the help of NYC) it’s his decision at the end of the movie that really shows us who he really is. While the Green Goblin chooses his desires over his responsibility, Peter chooses his responsibility over his desire. Rejecting MJ, a desire he has had for the longest time, really shows us who he is.
Okay, analysis over. Here are some random thoughts:
-
Honestly, this movie is very cringe at times, but I feel like it was meant to be that way.
-
MJ kind of sucks. Osbornes outburst in the hallway described her to a T.
-
I was surprised J.J Jameson didn’t give Parkers name to the Goblin. Surprisingly loyal for such a greedy guy.

Uncle Ben was way more human then I thought he would be. He lost his job, he curses, is very funny, and loves his family. I never watched this movie so I always thought he was this legendary person for sprouting the line, “With great power comes great responsibility.” But this line neglected to show why Ben said this. He was worried about Peter and wanted to help him get through a tough time. I just loved how human Uncle Ben and Aunt May were.

WILLEM DAFOE is the standout. He put his all into this role and scared me so much. “Back to formula?!” will forever be my favorite line of a movie.
This movie as a whole is weird, but it was the little character moments that I mentioned that made me like it. I appreciate this movie for what it did, and without it we wouldn’t have had any other Spider-Man related media. It was a very strong start for such a legendary character.
I will now go watch the Spider-Man 2!
